Curation & Creation

First opened in 1911 as the flagship location for Yeilding’s, Birmingham’s original department store, this three-story building once pulsed with the energy of downtown retail.

After decades of vacancy, it is now entering a new chapter: a thoughtful transformation, led by Gladstone Equity Partners, into a mixed-use destination in the heart of Birmingham’s urban core.

With its storied past and iconic location, The Yeilding is poised to reclaim its role as a cornerstone of downtown life.

The restored building will feature loft apartments on the upper floors, with 6,000 to 12,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground level.

History as Design Direction

As with all our work, the identity for The Yeilding began with deep historical research into the building and its place in Birmingham, with particular attention to the 1950s due to the project’s Historic Tax Credit requirements. Newspaper archives uncovered the phrase “Modern in every respect, and convenient in every particular,” which became an inspiring, era-specific counterpoint to the generic language often used in luxury residential marketing today.

Additional discoveries included historic logos, advertisements, and the building’s memorable shorthand address, “2nd and 22nd,” which reflected its prominence within the city. Research through newspapers, the Alabama Department of Archives, and the Birmingham Public Library also revealed long-forgotten photographs and artifacts that have since informed the visual identity and may ultimately live on as large-scale installations throughout the property.

Shaping the Identity

Once the strongest historical materials were identified, the brand system began to take shape. A redrawn logo, a new building illustration, a tight but distinctive color palette, and a family of typography, borders, and patterns work together to give The Yeilding an identity rooted in its past while confidently carrying it forward.

Along the way, our historical research and mood boards became a shared reference point across the broader project team. While the interiors were developing on a parallel track, this documentation helped reinforce the overall visual direction, ensuring the building’s story carried through from brand to space.
